Benefits
All Implicit Career Search based approaches have been proven to provide the following benefits:
THE PURPOSE PYRAMID
Working On Purpose In-class
The live online version of Working On Purpose resulted in demand from career advisors and employment agencies for a version that they could deliver directly, in the classroom, to their clients.
This has resulted in the Working On Purpose classroom version that adds some of the experiential activities from the original Implicit Career Search (ICS) workshop to the format delivered in the live-online program. This has resulted in a 2 ½ day workshop (5 modules at 3 hours per) that combines the group activities, that were such a vital component of the original ICS, with the brevity and flexibility of the Working On Purpose on-line version.
Another plus to this format is that facilitators can be trained in 3 days rather than the 10 days it takes to train an ICS practitioner.
Steve makes himself available once a month on zoom for all clients who have participated in any ICS program including Working On Purpose. He also holds another call for group facilitators.
Working On Purpose Train The Trainer
This program is recommended for anyone in the career counseling field whether you intend to deliver an ICS program or not. Much of what you will take away from the 3 days will be immediately applicable to your current job. The program is, of course, mandatory for those wishing to deliver the program within their agency or business.
Train the Trainer Content:
- Background to The Implicit Career Search Theory
- Learn the difference between facilitation and training
- Practice applying facilitation skills
- Become comfortable delivering each exercise for each module of the workshop
- Learn to deliver to different learning styles (kinesthetic. logical, audio, visual, reading/writing)

Testimonials from Working On Purpose workshops:
“I have found the workshop this week very helpful in bringing forward, backward thinking patterns that impact work, life, focus and attitude. Steve talked about choice viewpoints and becoming the author of our own story, and deciding “Who I want to be before what I want to do.” Yesterday we finished by talking about the present and future self. Today we will be writing our work purpose statements. Good stuff all around!! Thank you very much for recommending this to me. Can you please sign me up for the online Career Hero version?”
— Chiaka McNaughton
“My wins are that I am even more aware of what limiting beliefs are. That’s great…because I need to know what they are in order to change anything for the better. Another win is to have a reflection in my world that there is an actual program (that I am a part of!) that is all about people doing what speaks to them. Like wtf!! Now that is a massive win!”
— Paula Perry
Career Hero transformed the way we get our clients back into work. It’s almost magical.

Miller worked with Silviu Cojocaru combining their knowledge, wisdom and desire to stay true to the tenets of ICS philosophy to develop an online version of the Implicit Career Search:
The Online CAREER HERO Program Includes:
- 6 Career Planning Modules and a ‘Vault’ full of additional resources
- An “Ace Your Interview’ module
- An ‘Emotional Fitness’ module
- An active, moderated forum
- Monthly coaching calls for clients
- Monthly information calls for Career Advisors
Clients spend an average of 1 – 3 hours on each module and are expected to complete a comprehensive and attainable career plan during Module 6.
Participants are also invited to our ongoing monthly group call upon completing the program. Another monthly group call is provided to Career Advisors/Counselors who refer, or are considering referring, clients to this program.
The Implicit Career Search is a fantastic career discovery tool. It helps draw out things we’ve forgotten about ourselves, passions, interests, skills and thoughts/ideas from the past. These hidden knowings are often the road map to the career that is best suited to us. Whether it’s the mature worker forced to find a new career, someone new to the workforce and everyone in between, ICS is a great tool to assist clients in informed career decision making.
BC CERTIFIED CAREER DEVELOPMENT PRACTITIONER
Fawn Nielsen,
At its most fundamental level, The Implicit Career Search (ICS), is simply a method to guide individuals in preparing a career plan. At this level it can be compared to a strategic business plan applying the familiar SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) to individual planning, effectively viewing each of us as an individual business.
Due to Miller applying Joseph Campbell’s interpretation of ‘The Hero’s Journey’ as the background to the program, ICS also contains increasing levels of depth for those who go beyond the planning level.
Defining work as a contribution determined by each individual, results in ICS motivating participants at a deeply intrinsic level. This also results in the program sometimes being described as a ‘motivational seminar’ and Miller as a motivational speaker. It is still a planning process, with more depth to it than people may at first suspect. The motivation that comes along with it is a benefit that increases as each individual becomes increasingly aware that they are an intrinsic and invaluable part of the human puzzle.
The energy provided by this motivation results in:
- Unemployed individuals becoming employed three times quicker than by applying standard job search strategies.
- Less time between job loss and regaining employment
- Improved rates of retention, engagement, job satisfaction and cost of training for companies that provide their staff with this approach to career development
- Most importantly to Miller – a higher level of purpose resulting in more effective and creative solutions for the challenges we face as we on from an industrial age viewpoint of work.
The ICS process has always centered around 6 modules with each one designed to build upon the preceding one, and each exercise in the modules designed in the same ‘stackable’ fashion. Each exercise and module have infinite depth to them, meaning they are never ‘completed’ but the more we take from each module and exercise, the more we will gain from the following one.
The Hero’s Journey is a life-long adventure! Here are the questions an ICS participant will explore through the process:
to explore.
Workshop Activities
The ICS 5 day workshop is highly experiential and caters to different learning styles by applying: Lecturettes, Scientific Assessments, Movement and Metaphor exercises, Feedback, and non-verbal exercises.
The ICS group workshop has been running since 1994 and in 2018, thanks to the desire of Silviu Cojocaru to make the approach more available, ICS caught up to the information age by providing a self-paced online approach (Career Hero) and a live-online workshop (Working on Purpose).
